Video: Elementary Students Learn Japanese Culture In Special Program

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Students at Cook Elementary are getting ready for the stage as part of a Cultural Japanese Emergence program.

The students are presenting the play “Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes.”

It’s a story about a girl named Sadako Sasaki, who wants world peace.

The play takes place in Hiroshima at the time of the atomic bombing by the United States.

The students shared with us some of the things they’ve learned and some of the things they want the audience to know.

Khye Harriston says, “I learned about some Japanese games and how to speak Japanese.”

“I want people to know that people are important and friendships are important, too,” adds Quojoslyn Duck.

Educators are hoping the program will also benefit the families who have moved to the Golden Triangle to work for Yokahoma.

A reporter from a Japanese Newspaper in New York visited the school to do a story on the special program.

The production started tonight at 6:00.
