Ole Miss is Ahead of the Curve

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) — At a meeting with university leaders Thursday, President Obama set a goal for training 100 thousand new Math and Science teachers over the next 10 years.

The University of Mississippi is already ahead of the curve. 15 Freshmen at the university’s Oxford campus are beginning their second semester in the Mississippi Excellence in Teaching Program (METP).  The program’s aim is to recruit the state’s top performing students, and train them to be highly qualified teachers.

The excitement level among this year’s Inaugural class is running high. But they are also taking a longer view of the program.

“It’s awesome to be – I guess you’d say the trailblazers-to be the first class. It’s awesome. And I want to work so hard that, so that it runs well, and they keep doing it over and over every year.”

The 15 students in Ole Miss’ first METP class are studying to be Math and English teachers.
