EMCC Launches Online Classes

Late-starters and students in need of a “do-over” now have another option through East Mississippi Community College’s new intensive online classes.

Standard, full-term semesters at EMCC are 16 weeks long. In addition, the college also has intensive terms, which allow students to take the same classes in eight weeks. In the past, EMCC has not offered intensive classes through its online, or eLearning, program.

But that will change with in October, beginning with the fall’s Term II Intensive class schedule.

The condensed semester classes begin Oct. 15 but registration cuts off after Oct. 16. The online courses run through early December and count for three credit hours each.

Dr. Andrea Mayfield, vice president of EMCC’s Scooba campus, said the college began offering Term II online courses this year to increase academic opportunities for students who can’t attend class in person, whether due to work, family obligations or school activities such as athletics. The late start also helps students who missed the first registration deadline, couldn’t get financial aid in time or had to drop a needed course mid-semester.

“If a student is taking a full-term class and needs to start over, this gives them the opportunity for a fresh start,” said Mayfield.

Term II Intensive online courses include art appreciation, human growth and development, western civilization 1 and 2, nutrition and others. Online intensive courses are offered at all EMCC campuses.
