HOULKA, Miss. (WCBI) — Houlka is a unique position going into the 2014 season.

While the Wildcats are pushing towards making the playoffs for the first time in school history, they’re looking to the future in 2014.

“We’re trying to rebuild the program,” senior Jonathon Huffman said. “We’ve got a new head coach but we’re trying to lay down a foundation for the younger guys.”

“We have a lot of young players back,” senior Wyatt Esterley said. “We don’t have many seniors but we’re trying to set up these young players so they’ll learn a lot this year.”

Houlka finished last season with three victories but had to power through adversity losing their head coach during the middle of the season.

With last year’s struggles, the older players hope to take it upon themselves to lead the way once again.

“As older guys we all have to lead and see what these younger kids are capable of,” senior Sawyer Byars said. “We have to lay down the foundation for them and help them get better in any way they can.”

New head coach Sid Burt is staying positive going into the season as he takes over the Wildcats program.

“I would love to make the playoffs this season,” Burt said. “We’ve been building in a better direction. If we can take that next step, we would get even more momentum for our program.”
