WINONA, Miss. (WCBI) – The Winona Tigers are ushering in 13 new starters and looking to improve upon their two wins from 2013.

They’ll do so with a new head coach. Winona native Joey Tompkins comes back to his hometown after having the same position at J.Z. George the past two seasons. He’s been an assistant at Weir and Eupora.

“I think Ken Chandler did a great job in the 12 years he was here. I’m just hoping to carry on the tradition that he built when he was here,” Tompkins said.

The Tigers missed the 3A playoffs last season for the first time in six years. Tompkins will try to lead Winona back to the postseason.

“We’ve got a good group of juniors and seniors,” he said. “We’ve got some good skill position guys. We’ve got some guys that I feel like are going to fit the role we’re looking for.”

Senior Marlo Hill will return at quarterback after splitting time there last season. Junior Teon Thomas is back at running back after rushing for 800 yards a year ago.

Winona begins its season at Kosciusko Aug. 22.
