BELMONT, Miss. (WCBI) — The ground and pound Cardinals are back with plenty of firepower at their disposal.

Head coach Kerry Moody returns an experienced bunch on both sides of the ball and will have depth and talent all across the field.

“We return six starters on offense and five on defense. Our core will be on the offensive and defensive lines,” said coach Moody. “We have a couple of those kids who’ve played for three years as offensive starters.

“That’s where our experience will be. Since we run the wing-T, that will be a great asset for us having them up front.”

And with that throw-back wing-T offense, the Cardinals keep the philosophy of ball control to turn the game in their favor.

“Our goal on offense is to keep the ball for 32 minutes,” said Moody. “If we do that, the other team doesn’t have the ball and we dictate the pace of the game. With our personnel, we like to move the chains and keep the football.”

One major asset the Cardinals will have at their disposal is a mobile and confident quarterback.

Junior Luke Alexander takes over the reigns of the offense at quarterback and if his name sounds familiar, that’s because he’s already verbally committed to John Cohen and the Mississippi State baseball team.

Coach Moody believes his skills and talent as an athlete will translate well to leading the team.

“Luke will be a good asset. He can throw and read defenses well and is a playmaker. We think he can bring a unity to the team and that will be our strong hold for this season.”
