MATHISTON, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – The East Webster football team practiced once again Tuesday near Mathiston elementary school as the players await their move back to their renovated high school following the tornado two years ago.

The Wolverines look to improve upon their 9-4 finish from a year ago when they advanced to the second round of the 2A playoffs. There’s a history of success: the team has reached the playoffs for ten-straight seasons.

“Last season I think we made strides in being competitive,” head coach Doug Wilson said. “We had lost so much a couple years before that and we just had to rebuild. There are definitely expectations with this group. We had a great season with them last year and most of them played last year as freshmen. We look like we’re a mature team but on paper we’re actually a pretty young team.”

15 starters return, ten of them on offense, for Wilson’s squad. They may be young, but they’re experienced.

“I think we have a lot since we have a lot more players coming back,” senior Colby Williamson said. “We’re a lot better working as a group this year. There is a lot better teamwork.”

“Coach Wilson pumps us up about this season. He made us very excited,” senior defensive tackle L.T. Powell said.

“It gives me a lot of confidence to know I got guys coming back on offense, the same line,” junior all-around player Deangelo Liggins said.

Liggins is one of three players who may see time at quarterback. He will play everywhere this year: receiver, running, linebacker, safety, he’s a true athlete by position.

“We’re very confident,” Wilson said. “This is actually the first year in a couple years that we’re going to be able to have the same gameplan. The kids are doing the same thing that we’ve been doing for the last couple seasons now.”
