CALHOUN CITY, Miss. (WCBI Sports) – Head Coach Tim Melton is in his second year at Calhoun Academy. The Cougars went 11-2 last season. They graduate their quarterback and three leading rushers but Melton says there are still experienced guys coming back.

“We lost a lot of our skill players last year, running backs, quarterbacks, safety, linebackers, your key role guys, but I think bringing back a solid, veteran offensive line is always key when you’re trying to bring a group of young guys through,” Melton said.

Melton says a strength for the team will be the offensive line led by seniors Cameron Bryant and Rhett McCormick. Six of the eight seniors overall coming back started in last year’s state championship game.

“I got here last year and nobody really expected us to do a whole lot and we had a great group of guys last year that helped us along and this year I think that same core group is ready to step up and help us,” Melton said.

Senior quarterback JT Washington returns after having fully recovered from the ACL injury he suffered last season. Melton feels that this team is still the underdog.

“I definitely feel like we’re in the underdog role. A lot of people in our conference have written us off with what we graduated last year,” Melton said. “That’s the role that we like to take round here. We like being the underdog, underestimated, so we can work harder than anyone so we can bounce around and show them that we still have a good team.”
