Local artist Jennifer Hankins-Shelton created the 2014 pottery butterfly and platter to be sold exclusively by the NMMC Cancer Center. “This is a true ‘labor of love’ for me,” Hankins-Shelton said. “It is always easy to get inspiration for a new butterfly because I know every sale helps someone who may be struggling financially because of cancer. I lost my Mom to cancer in November 2012, so helping the Cancer Center through this project is especially close to my heart.”
As in years past each butterfly is accented with a unique wire, colored bead and metal “word of inspiration” tag. Some of the butterflies have a pink bead for breast cancer. Each butterfly sells for $20, and each platter sells for $35. Both benefit the NMMC Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund, which is administered by the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi.
“This year’s butterfly has a warm cappuccino glaze with touches of cobalt, red and green,” Hankins-Shelton said.
The Cancer Center Patient Assistance Fund helps an average of 32 patients per month for a total of $90,000 granted in 2013. Monies are raised through several annual fundraisers as well as donations given by family members in memory or honor of a cancer patient. NMMC employees also donate approximately $7,000 each month through payroll deduction.
“The Patient Assistance Fund helps so many people,” Hankins-Shelton said. “You never know when it may be one of your family members or friends who is receiving the help.”
