Black History Month Program Honors EMCC Instructor

MAYHEW, Miss. (WCBI) – East Mississippi Community College held a Black History Program earlier today, February 19.

During the ceremony, a long-time EMCC instructor and former student was honored.

The campus dedicated the Math and Science Building to Johnny W. Fisher.

Fisher was one of the first African-American students to go to EMCC back in the 60’s and faculty say he was one of the school’s best role models when returned to teach.

“Mr. Fisher worked in the math and science building the whole time he was an employee here at EMCC. He was the rock of the building. His office was right there at the door when you came in. He always had a kind and pleasant word for everyone. He made everyone feel great about what they were doing and their contribution to the campus,” says Cathy Kemp.

All of Fisher’s family were in attendance and did the sign unveiling.

A reception was held afterwards to celebrate the legend’s life who recently passed away.
