Columbus, MS, July 8, 2013 – On Thursday, July 11, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., The Columbus Arts Council will host a gallery opening and reception featuring the work of Robin Whitfield. Robin is a very talented watercolorist from Grenada, Mississippi whose exhibit will be on display until the end of July. Robin will also be sharing her love of painting by offering two watercolor workshop classes on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
Robin Whitfield spends her time exploring the forests, rivers and swamps near her home in Grenada, MS. She works on location with watercolors focused on the seasonal conditions, plants, and animals of specific places. The surface of swamp water, the layered banks of rivers, and the seasonal offerings of field and forest also leave their marks, shapes, and colors directly on her paper. These experiments are leading her into new directions.
Robin studied painting at Delta State University where she was exposed to working in the field as a way to sharpen her senses and create a dialogue with nature. She also works for Communities In Schools of Greenwood Leflore Inc. as a Core Arts teaching artist in the public schools and project director of Gallery 208 – the showcase of CIS student work in Greenwood.
Two watercolor workshops will be offered by the artist on Saturday, July 13. Workshop I- “Nature Exploring” from 9 AM- 12 PM, is open to all ages (children sixteen and under must be accompanied by an adult). Cost of the class is $10 per person and only $5 for each additional immediate family member. Supplies are included in the class fee. Workshop II, “Advanced Watercolor Responding to Life in Watercolor” from 1 PM – 4 PM, is open to ages twelve and up. Cost of the class is $40 per person. Participants may bring their own supplies. Recommended supplies include: watercolor set, synthetic sable paintbrushes (sizes 10, 12, 20, and/or 30), paint palette, and Arches watercolor paper. Participants may rent supplies (watercolor, brush, and palette) for $5 as well as purchase Arches watercolor paper for $5 on site. Both workshops will include outdoor sessions so participants may want to bring things such as a hat, drink and portable chair if desired. Drawing boards, buckets and drinking water will be provided. Robin is an avid naturalist and welcomes this opportunity to help adults and children see the beauty, understand what they are viewing and express that onto paper with dynamic watercolor techniques.
Light refreshments will be provided at the gallery opening and admission is free and open to the public. The exhibit will run through the end of July. The Rosenzweig Arts Center is located at 501 Main Street in downtown Columbus.
