COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – 200 of Lowndes County’s first responders were honored Friday for their work to keep the community safe.

The 13th annual Salute to Lowndes County’s Finest was held at the Trotter Convention Center.

Law enforcement, EMS, fire fighters, and emergency management were there for a free meal and raffle prizes.

Organizations served food or sponsored the event.

CPI Group President Mark Smith says he came up with the idea after helping with the September 11th terrorist attack recovery in New York.

Smith says the event provides a well deserved meal.

“We really, really at this time, at this place and time we really need to be recognizing them a lot more and thanking them for what they do. They just don’t get enough credit,” said Smith.

Franklin Academy students performed patriotic songs for the first responders.
