The Mathiston Development and Support Council will unveil the designs for Mathiston’s Veterans’ Memorial during a Veterans’ Day ceremony November, 10th.
The memorial, designed by architect Bill Mann, will be built on a 3.8 acre property acquired by the city in June 2012, located between Mathiston’s town park and its baseball and tennis recreational areas. The city recently accepted bids for timber removal on this property, proposed to be called “Veterans Memorial Park.” The monument will feature the names of all Mathiston area veterans who lost their lives in service.
According to Mathiston Development and Support Council Executive Director, Lavelle McAlpin, “There is no question that in times of war and national emergency, Mathiston has answered the call to serve. Mathiston and its surrounding areas have had seventeen men to die in service of their country. For such a small area, this is a tremendous amount of sacrifice. In addition, we have had countless others who have served in our nation’s armed forces. Mathiston lost one soldier in World War I, twelve in World War II, two in the Korean War era, one in Vietnam, and one in Beruit, Lebanon. This monument is an excellent way to honor these men who sacrificed their lives, as well has honor all those who have served.”
The Veterans’ Day ceremony will take place at Mathiston First Baptist Church, Saturday, November 10, at 2:00pm.
