LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Mississippi is just one of the southern states affected by the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Several State Republican lawmakers are pleased with the decision.

Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann says Mississippi voters could have to start showing photo identification at the polls by the middle of next year.

He spoke Tuesday after the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a section of the Voting Rights Act.

County leaders and government officials we spoke to remain split on the debate.

“You know, yes we made a lot of progress, but still in hamlets and villages around the country, we still have those forces that will fights progress in the political environment,” said Lowndes County District 5 Supervisor LeRoy Brooks.

“Don’t you think since 1965 we’ve been punished enough for the sins of our fathers? I think we can run our own elections, it’s really a state issue,” said Republican Representative Gary Chism.

Senator Roger Wicker also spoke out about the ruling saying today’s decision is a good step in returning power back to the States.
