WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – Angela Turner Lairy says she will run for the District 16 seat in the January 15th special election.

The winner of that election will serve the remainder of Bennie Turner’s term through 2015. He died last week.

Like her father, Lairy is an attorney and the city and county prosecutor in West Point and Clay County.

She says filling her father’s shoes in the Legislature is a next logical step.

“And we discussed a lot of issues he felt strongly about and I definitely would like to see someone in the position that will have a concern for the people as well as someone who can be even handed and fair. I’d like to further the course he started,” says Lairy.

The qualifying deadline for the special election is December 17th.

The district covers all or parts of Clay, Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Noxubee counties.
