MDOC Moving Inmates From 13 Jails

WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Many Mississippi inmates will soon be finishing their prison terms in different facilities.

Budget cuts are to blame.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections started moving more than 600 prisoners, Friday, from 13 of the 15 regional jails.

Two of them are in Chickasaw and Winston Counties.

Chickasaw lost 10 inmates, and Winston lost 20.

Regional facilities receive nearly $30 per inmate per day.

And because of the move, Winston County loses about $600 a day.

MDOC has to cut its spending by $5 million to comply with the governor’s recent order for agencies to cut 1.5 percent from their budgets this fiscal year.
