GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) – Greenville Mayor Chuck Jordan announced his resignation Wednesday. He said he made the decision after learning he has pancreatic cancer.

The Delta Democrat Times reports (http://bit.ly/S5csGR ) that Jordan’s resignation will take effect at midnight Monday.

Jordan, a retired banker, was elected mayor in December after defeating Democrat Carl McGee. He was inaugurated on Jan. 3.

Jordan says Vice Mayor Carolyn Weathers will be acting mayor until a special election on Oct. 22.

City Attorney Andy Alexander says the deadline for mayoral candidates to qualify for the special election is 5 p.m. Oct. 2.
