Lawmakers To Ban Teen Tans?

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Some Mississippi lawmakers want to stop teenagers from soaking up the rays at the tanning salon.

They cite evidence of an increased risk of skin cancers from using tanning beds, especially for high school and college-age women.

Two bills in the state Legislature propose banning anyone under age 18 from using indoor tanning beds and lamps.

House Bill 1182 and Senate Bill 2076 would impose fines on salon owners who violate the rule.

Supporters include the Mississippi Dermatology Association, Mississippi State Department of Health, and the American Cancer Society.

However, members of the tanning industry call the proposed ban excessive.
