JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Mississippi vaccination activists celebrate a huge victory after years of failed attempts.

The State House passed a bill Wednesday, allowing parents to have a doctor’s excuse to keep their children from getting all the vaccinations.

It enforces a law already in place.

Lawmakers say a parent should have that right.

“It was a very hard fought bill,” said Rep. Gary Chism, (R) District 37. “They have been asking for this ever since I’ve been a representative, and finally, we get a vote on the floor.”

“I’m elated,” said Pontotoc resident Cheryl Peeples. “I have a vaccine injured son who was denied a medical exemption by the State Department of Health, so this is good news for us.”

The bill heads to the Senate next for a vote. Supporters are optimistic it will pass.
