ITAWAMBA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Itawamba County is the site of this weekend’s third annual Stand By Your Grill BBQ Championships.

Bob Roberts BBQ of Columbus is one of 64 teams competing at Jaime Whitten Park on the Ten-Tom Waterway for more than $12,000 in cash and prizes. Roberts prepared his barbeque for judging by the Kansas City Barbeque Society guidelines.

Kim Graham of the Itawamba County Development Council serves as the contest organizer.

“There is a five minute window before turn in time and a five minute window after turn in time,” Graham said. “So I’m not going to say stringent, but it’s KCBS certified sanctioned so everybody here knows the rules. They abide by them. And they’re very serious about their cooking.”

Graham says they are expecting 8,000 people to attend the event which includes a big gathering in downtown Fulton. She estimates it will have a $2 million impact on the local ecomomy.
