Video: Jail Site Bills Move Forward In Legislature

JACKSON (WCBI) – The Senate floor is the next stop for bills allowing new jails to be built anywhere in Lee and Itawamba Counties.

Senate committees today approved  House passed bills lifting the requirement that jails be located within a mile of the county courthouse.  Supervisors in both counties are in talks to build new jails to replace outdated facilities.  No sites have been picked but supervisors want the flexibility to look countywide for possible construction sites.    If the full Senate passes both bills, they will then head to the governor for his signature.
