ITAWAMBA, Co., Miss. (WCBI) – The newest member of the Itawamba County Sheriff’s Department may have a leg up on tracking down criminals. The four-legged friend was a donation from Homeland Security and has been trained to sniff out bombs.

Reese is a Labrador/pit bull mix that now calls Itawamaba County home and is the third K9 in the department.

Reese and her handler Capt. Jason Dickinson completed an eight-week training session on Monday. The training session teaches the dog and human how to interact with each other and work on obedience and commands.

The K9 is primarily trained to sniff out bombs, explosives and firearms by using the scent of gunpowder. Homeland Security suggested Reese for this area due to the lack of bomb sniffing dogs in Itawamba County.
