Video: Keeping College Students Enrolled At The University

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-When it comes to college enrollment, recruiting students is only half the battle, keeping them is important too.

Mississippi University for Women manages to do both.

The school takes pride in the number of students that finish their degrees at The W.

“We’ve seen a pretty good bump this year in overall retention of continuing students,” said Dr. Jim Borsig, president of MUW

“The high retention rate, I’m not surprised,” said Kristi Metzger, senior at The W.

Metzger is majoring in graphic design at the W.

She believes a big part of the school’s high retention rate comes from The W offering a variety of programs and activities for students to engage in.

“There’s all these different clubs, and you’ll find different social clubs if you can’t find a club, you’ll find a social club of people who have the same kind of mindset that you do,” said Metzger.

“We have put into place a redesigned student success center, we have navigators in each college, out faculty has taken a look at how they do advising,” said Dr. Borsig.

“I just like how together the community at The W is,” said Candice Barber, senior biology major at MUW.

Barber said at one point, she actually thought about transferring from The W, but it was the working relationship that the professors have with students its that made her stay.

“I guess it makes you feel special that your instructor knows your name, and tries to get to know you,” she said.

“We take great pride in the work that our staff does and our faculty does to help students navigate the things that are happening in their life and be able to pursue their education,” said Dr. Borsig.
“There’s been times where I’ll ask a teacher does this seem right, and it’s usually my graphic design class,” said Metzger. “My teacher will say, well this is a little bit different than what my work normally looks like, that they know what my work looks like compared to another student really makes me feel apart of the classroom.”
Dr. Borsig also said The W has the highest degree completion ratio of any of the eight public universities.
