Tishomingo Co. Sheriff’s Department Awards High School Seniors

TISHOMINGO CO., Miss. (WCBI) -Some lucky high school students were awarded money from the Tishomingo County Sheriff’s Department.

Each year the Tishomingo Sheriff’s Department hands out an award for a male and a female high school senior from Tishomingo County High School, and an award for a male and a female high school senior from Belmont High School.

These awards are from nominations that are sent in by faculty and other individuals within the school district.

The award is based on two former officers that worked for the Tishomingo Sheriff’s Department who died while still serving the citizens of this county.

Though Deputy Sammy South and Deputy Wayne Ivey did not die in the line of duty, both deputies were very instrumental in making Tishomingo County safe for everyone, especially the children of the county.

For that, this Award / Scholarship was created, and even though it may not seem like a lot of money for these seniors, it is the’ departments way of saying “thank you”.

Sheriff John Daugherty wanted to rename this Award / Scholarship for those that have served in Law Enforcement within Tishomingo County and for those that died protecting the citizens of the county.
Those with the department say just within this year alone, 2016, they have witnessed the deaths of a former Sheriff that was elected by the citizens of this county and served (Sheriff Bob Payne), and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Agent, Lee Tart, who was killed in the line of duty while protecting the citizens of Tishomingo County.
Sheriff Daugherty wanted to recognize all the men and women who serve and protect as well as still pay homage to Deputy South and Deputy Ivey.
Sheriff Daugherty renamed the Sammy South / Wayne Ivey Memorial Scholarship Award to the Tishomingo County Officer’s Memorial Scholarship Award for this reason.
The Tishomingo County Officer’s Memorial Scholarship Award has been given to Tishomingo County High School Seniors, Madison Borden and Logan Whited.
Madison is the daughter of Galelus and Kim Borden of Iuka, Mississippi and Logan is the son to Bruce and Melinda Whited, also of Iuka, Mississippi.
The Tishomingo County Officer’s Memorial Scholarship Award has also been given to Belmont High School seniors Dakota Belue and Chancellor Paden.
