(JACKSON, Ms)  WCBI – The tragic shooting of 2 Tupelo police officers exposed a flaw in the states system for paying law enforcement but now that problem is almost fixed.

When Tupelo officer Joseph Maher was critically injured in the December shooting which left fellow officer Gale Stauffer dead, , the city found out he was required by law to take all of his built up sick leave and vacation time in order to keep drawing a paycheck during his recovery.

Today the House passed a Senate bill which would let cities and counties keep paying injured officers their full pay without forcing them to use up their leave time. As part of todays vote, the bill was renamed the Officer Gale Stauffer and Joseph Maher Law Enforcement Appreciation Act.

The house version extends that protection to any emergency personnel or officers injured in the line of duty. The Senate must accept that change before it goes to the Governor.
