Legislative Budget Committee Unveils Budget Proposal
JACKSON ( WCBI) – Lawmakers are being handed a proposed $6.1 billion dollar budget to work with in the upcoming legislative session.
Budget writers today unveiled the proposed spending plan which cuts the state budget by 3% in the next fiscal year. The proposal sets the MAEP education spending level at the same $2.2 billion dollar level used this year. The plan calls for a one year moratorium on buying new vehicles for the state. That is supposed to save $19 million. State travel is being cut by $12 million. $4.5 million dollars currently used for remediation programs for students transferring from community colleges to 4 year schools is being redirected for other state programs.
