WEST POINT, Miss. — A 14-year-old has been formally charged in the murder of  Randy Kelly, 41, who was found dead early Tuesday morning with a gunshot wound to the head.

When the body was found, the 14-year- old son of the victim was missing for several hours and later found wounded near the crime scene with an apparent self-inflicted knife wound.

After a preliminary investigation, he quickly became the prime suspect in the death his father. The young man’s injuries were so severe that he was transferred to the University Medical Center in Jackson where he underwent surgery. He was released into the custody of the West Point Police Department late Friday afternoon and was transported back to West Point and detained pending formal charges.

Even though the nature of the crime allows him to be charged and adjudicated as an adult, his name is not being released at this time. He has been charged with one count of murder and is being held in an undisclosed detention facility.

According to Chief Tim Brinkley, “Although this young man is being charged as an adult, I think it’s in the best interest of the case not to disclose his location right now. There are lots of elements of this case that are still under investigation. A juvenile has been charged as an adult but at the end of the day he is still just 14 years old. Because this case has generated so much interest, we want to be sure that media influence doesn’t have the potential to influence the outcome of any of the proceeding before we disclose the facility where he is being held.”

He was officially arraigned today in West Point Municipal Court. Judge Benny Jones set his bond at $250,000. This case is under investigation and anyone with relevant information is asked to call Crime Stoppers or the West Point Police Department.
