NOXUBEE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- Thanksgiving is just five days away and everyone deserves a delicious meal.

That’s why the Mount Zion Saving Life Food Pantry in Noxubee County hosted its first annual turkey giveaway for families in need.

Two hundred Noxubee County residents began lining up at five-thirty Saturday morning, anxious to get their hands on their traditional thanksgiving turkey.

“Two hundred turkeys means, Two families gonna eat good,” food pantry volunteer Jimmie Gavin said.

“The sole purpose is giving back to the community, and to the people,” Director of the Mount Zion Saving Life Food Pantry said.

Being a blessing and giving back to the community is what this year’s turkey giveaway was all about.

“Cause somebody wasn’t gonna be able to have turkey this thanksgiving without these turkeys,” Gavin said.

And one of the thankful residents on the receiving end of these free turkeys is Mrs. Mattie Hampton.

“I got a big family, I’m the mother of 11 kids of my own, and I can’t tell you how many grans, and great grans I have, so it’s a blessing when we all get together and I thank God for it,” Noxubee County resident Mattie Hampton said.

And she already has plans for how she’s going to use it.

“I’m going to make dressing with this turkey,” Hampton said.

Football players, and county officials helped pass out the free turkeys.

Easter Duck is the Director of the food pantry, and says she’s happy to know that families who are in need, will now be able to enjoy a delicious meal.

“Just to see the joy on the clients face, and those who are not a client, i’m just happy that’s all I can say, and I thank God for that,” Duck said.
This was the First year the Pantry hosted the turkey giveaway, and they plan to make it an annual one.
