STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Breast milk is known to be the best source of nutrients for a new born, especially premature and sick infants.

However, some moms cannot provide their sick baby with the nutrients they need.

Lindsey Marsh, a registered nurse in the nursery at OCH Regional Medical Center, sees first hand how important proper nutrition is for a new born.

“Sometimes their medical conditions can cause them to not be able to take formula and so breast milk is the best nutrition possible,” Marsh explains.

While pregnant with her third child, Marsh’s friend told her how she could help sick infants.

“Never in my life did I think I would have extra milk to donate so after Carson was born, I had all of this extra milk and so I asked her how do I go about going through this process,” says Marsh.

Marsh donated 283 ounces of breast milk to the Milk Bank in Texas, which distributes to 12 states, including Mississippi. And Marsh still has 2,000 more ounces to send.

Lactation specialist Robin Prier says sick and premature infants are those need it most.

“The babies can’t digest formula well, it’s hard on their stomach and so mother’s milk is made for newborns and particularly pre-mature infants,” Prier says.

Marsh encourages other mothers to consider donating their leftover breast milk.

“If you have the opportunity that you have extra milk in the freezer that you’re not going to use, please pursue this because you’re helping this tiny child that you just probably never meet face to face but to know you are potentially saving their life is truly a blessing,” says Marsh.

Currently, there is a milk bank in Jackson that is still in the fundraising process.
