Active Shooter Response Training

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-After MSU’s recent scare and the shooting at Delta State, universities are now educating their campus on how to respond to a shooting emergency.
Today, MSU hosted an active shooter response training for its faculty and staff to discuss plans and protocols.

“Avoid, Deny, and Defend,” MSU Chief of Police Vance Rice said.

Those are the three options MSU says will work best when responding to an active shooter alert.

“You want to avoid the shooter, deny him access to where you are or in the worst case scenario, you’re gonna have to defend yourself,” Rice said.

Since 2013, 160 people have died due to active shooter incidents.

Law enforcement said there’s no proper way to respond when gunfire erupts and every situation is different.

However, MSU police said having a plan on how to react can save lives.

“Practice that plan, whether it’s you saying your plan out loud to yourself and your students, or if it’s you playing it over and over again mentally so that you feel prepared should that situation come up,” Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Regina Hyatt said.

Even with all of the planning that MSU is doing, when an active shooter alert occurs, it will always come down to being a judgement call, but being alert and being aware of your surrounding is always key.

And that includes when you see something suspicious.

“Making sure that if something is happening that we are willing to step up and say, ‘hey is everything ok? What’s going on with you?’ If we see another person in distress, that we take a moment to be attentive to them,” Hyatt said.

This training session is for faculty and staff.

However, students will see a similar video in the next few weeks.

“After you have an event is when you have everyone’s attention, and so now is a very good time for us, because we’ll get more participation,” Rice said.
MSU will continue to host this training sessions for the rest of the week.
