FAYETTE, AL. (WCBI)- On Sunday, the Fayette Historical Society added a piece of history to its Rail Road Depot Museum.

“For those of us who have been busy working here you kind of get tired of looking at the same thing, so we said, what can we do to make it better,” said Eddy Campbell, president of the Fayette Historical Society.

After two years of hard work, and receiving two grant,s a model displaying an exact replica of downtown Fayette was finally unveiled to the public.

The twenty thousand dollar project was created by Campbell and other members of the Fayette Historical Society and a famous renown artist from Alabama, Creighton “Peco” Forsman.

“I worked about six and a half days a week for as long as a could until I got tired and had to quit,” said Forsman.

“We started out with just a plain table and of course we covered it with plywood, then we painted it, and then we laid out the center street, the main street through down town we laid it out first, and then we begun to try putting the buildings in there,” said Campbell.

But in the process of building this model, Campbell said they ran into a huge problem.

“The courthouse was just something so unique and unusual we just couldn’t do it,” said Campbell.

And that’s when they called on Forsman for assistance.  Forsman said it took him over 500 hours to create the complicated courthouse.

“It’s an unusual building building, unusual configuration and a lot of detail on it, but it was fun to figure out how to do it,” he said.

Dozens of residents came to the reception on Sunday to take in the completed project.

One that Peco and Campbell are both grateful for.

“I love history, and I love Fayette memorable, I just like it,” said Campbell.

“I hope it’ll still be around for years to come,” said Forsman.

The model will remain at the Railroad Depot Museum all month long.

Then be taken over to the Fayette County Courthouse for the month of May, before returning to the Railroad Depot Museum for good.
