COLUMBUS, MISS. (WCBI) –Two days and twenty hours after being in a plane, six Columbus Air Force Base Airmen came back home today just in time for the holidays.

“Super excited. I can’t wait to see him. I just need to hug his neck.”

Those words fill the airport as families and friends hold their signs, jumping up and down with excitement waiting to see their airmen walk through the airport doors. One airman’s mom, Kellie Murphy, had a last minute surprise for her returning son.

“We told him we weren’t going to come out, we were going to wait for him to come Georgia, but we decided to hop in the car and drive over.”

Lauryn Scarborough was anxious to see her brother and couldn’t wait to surprise him.

“I’m a little nervous because you know, it’s been a while but we are excited.”

Surprised Airman David Patterson was only expecting to see his girlfriend and was shocked to see the whole family because he wasn’t expecting to until next week.

“I saw signs but I just thought it was like friends holding up signs. I knew Lindsey was here, but I didn’t think my family was.”

After Kellie Murphy finally got to hug her son’s neck, she had one thing to say.

“Just absolutely proud. I’m so thankful for his sacrifice and his service of course, but just as being his mom, I’m super proud of him.”

After 12,000 miles and 180 days away from home, even airmen who don’t get to hug their loved ones today still felt the love from miles away.

Senior Airman Braxton Crismore let his mom in New Mexico know that he was returning to the States a few days ago and he could hear tears of joy through the phone.

“She’s just happy I’ll be there because my grandparents are coming down. I haven’t seem them in a couple of years.”

The airmen will get to spend weeks at home before coming back to the base for work.
They are all very glad to be on American soil.
