Ala. House Speaker Not Resigning Amid Ethics Probe

OPELIKA, Ala. — An attorney for House Speaker Mike Hubbard says he will not resign following his indictment on ethics charges.

Attorney Mark White said during a news conference in Auburn Tuesday that Hubbard will spend the next two weeks working on his campaign while his attorneys prepare for his defense. He says Hubbard will enter a not guilty plea at his arraignment Dec. 3.

Legislators and other supporters of Hubbard attended the news conference to show their support for Hubbard. They included U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, who represents Auburn in Congress.

Rogers says the charges are political and are an effort to knock out Hubbard as a possible candidate for governor in four years.

A Lee County grand jury indicted Hubbard following an investigation conducted by the state attorney general’s office.
