Alabama Prison Bill Moves Forward

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WCBI) – Alabama lawmakers move a bill forward that would build four new prisons.

The state Senate budget committee approved the proposal this morning.

Governor Robert Bentley is proposing using eight hundred million dollars in bonds for the projects.

The vote comes on the heels of two prison uprisings at a south Alabama prison.

Bentley says the state’s prison have become increasingly overcrowded, making it dangerous for inmates and corrections officers.

Some lawmakers are concerned about the legislation, because it doesn’t guarantee Alabama firms will be used for the work.
