Alabama Special Session Update

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – A Senate committee has delayed action on a House-passed cigarette tax and other revenue bills because of uncertainty over whether the bills could pass the full Senate.

The Senate Finance and Taxation Committee on Friday delayed a vote on the bills from the agenda.

Committee Chairman Arthur Orr said senators needed to have more discussions about the outlook for the bills on the Senate floor.

Orr said the committee might take up the bills Friday afternoon.

Alabama lawmakers are in a special session to write a general fund budget. The budget faces a $200 million shortfall.

The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a 25-cent cigarette tax and other revenue bills.
