MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WCBI) — Alabama is making more room for its prisoners.

On Tuesday, Governor Robert Bentley introduced the Alabama Prison Transformation Initiative Act, which will provide construction for four modern, efficient prison facilities.

The goal of the act is to make the Department of Corrections more efficient – reducing overcrowding, and improving safety conditions for inmates and corrections officers.

Right now, Bentley says the facilities are so old, it costs too much money to maintain and repair the buildings, transport inmates, and offer medical services to them.

Construction on the three men’s facilities, and one women’s facility should start in fall of 2017.

It’s expected to be complete within three years.
