Alcorn Cemetery Controversy Continues

 PRESS RELEASE

Jackson, Miss.—Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery is back on the market seeking a new owner.  For the third time since in being placed in Receivership, the cemetery is now available for public bid.

“We want to put this issue to rest and are hopeful no further litigation will be filed to delay placing Forrest Memorial Park into private ownership,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.

SOUTHBank, a Huntsville, Alabama-based company and sole lienholder of the cemetery, has thwarted several efforts to sell Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery through an open, public bid.  Rejecting an offer to purchase the cemetery, SOUTHBank has filed litigation in Court to have the public sales stopped.  In a recent decision, the Alcorn County Chancery Court allowed for Forrest Memorial Park to be, once again, placed for public bid.

Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery consists of approximately 12.50 acres and the sale includes real property only and does not include contractual obligations of the former owners.  Sealed bids should be submitted to Alcorn County Chancery Clerk Bobby Marolt no later than 5:00 pm, Monday, July 6, 2015.  The bids will be opened no later than 3:00 pm, July 7, 2015 and the property sold to the highest bidder.

All closing costs, surveying or legal fees are the responsibility of the individuals who purchase the property.

A bid package for Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery is available on the Secretary of State’s website at www.sos.ms.gov.
