STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Some of Mississippi’s best and brightest young men are in Starkville this week learning about the political process.
The Mississippi American Legion Boys State has been teaching young men about the electoral process since 1939. The boys will attend several breakout sessions to discuss the role of government. There will also be a variety of speakers including Governor Bryant, Attorney General Jim Hood and State Treasurer Lynn Fitch. The goal is to leave the boys more educated and informed about the democratic process.
“Basically, we’re breaking them up into groups. We have our Federalists and we have our Nationalist party. It’s a fictitious government, as we call it, the State of the Magnolia. Here, they’re going to learn about leadership. They’re going to meet other leaders and basically, they’re going to get to know each other form networks, friendships and memories that’ll last a life time,” says Boys State Staff Director, Michael Sipp.
MSU will continue to serve through next year as the host campus. The program provides more than $100,000 in scholarships.
