[bitsontherun 9GBceGvb]AMORY, Miss. – (WCBI) People in the city of Amory are making strides towards becoming an even healthier community.

A new healthy hometown committee having exercised their minds, are now getting residents to exercising their bodies.

“This is only an effort to create a movement toward a healthier hometown for our young people all the way to our senior citizens,” said Amory Mayor Howard Boozer.

There has already been a conscious effort to get residents fit, as seen in the acquisition of the 2012 Playful City Award. A senior citizens fitness group of dozens of enthusiastic ladies meet three times a week at the East amory Community Center.

“I’ve met with them several time and its something they really enjoy doing. It keeps them moving, it keeps them active,” said Boozer.

“Sometimes they keep me hopping. I have some that are like, there is an 87 year old lady that’s here, she keeps me hopping. There are days when I’m tired; I’m saying I’m tired and they are ready to go, they are rearing to go,” said Wilma Smith, Senior Citizens Director.

“And thats our goal here is to get amory moving, eating the right foods, a healthier lifestyle,” added Boozer.

As part of the Healthy Home Initiative, there are safe sidewalks for children like the ones at West Amory Elementary School.

There are three active walking tracks for seniors and children. A dozen playground areas can be accessed by using Quick Response Codes that are scanned using a smart phone.

“All our play areas are mapped and available, will be available so someone who is not familiar with the town is looking for a play area they can access that and find it,” said Boozer.

An April 22. 2013 date for installing play equipment at the Pea Patch has been postponed until the weather permits.
