Amory Storm Damage Update

AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – Law enforcement increased patrols Monday night in the 20 block area that was heavily damaged earlier that morning to make sure no one is looting from damaged homes.

The National Weather Service in Memphis says two tornadoes touched down in Monroe County on Monday. The first hit near Little Coontail Road. Meteorologists say the preliminary rating on that tornado is an EF-0. The second twister, a preliminary EF-1, hit Amory.  They were also investigating to determine if a tornado touched down near Smithville. The damage there could be from straight line winds.

Most of the damage came from falling trees.

The Monroe County Emergency Management Agency says 65 homes were damaged in the county. 12 of those received major damage or were destroyed.

Debris in drains created a flooding issue after the tornado moved out.

Damage in the city was reported all to the way to the Monroe County government complex.

Less than 200 customers in Amory remained without power at last check on Monday night.

The city will be releasing a debris removal plan in the coming days.
