Animal Shelter Fire Kills Several Animals

Booneville’s Halfway Home Animal Shelter is reaching out to the community for help as they recover from a fire that claimed the life of many animals Tuesday.

According to officials the fire began in the shelter’ s Kitty Cottage, a detached building housing cats and puppies,  after an unplugged vacuum cleaner apparently caught fire. The fire allegedly started near an area where the blankets and animal food was stored. Due to substantial damage, authorities are not sure of the cause.

According to Daily Corinthian, shelter director Sheila Luff discovered heavy smoke coming from the building as she was going to get an item from storage. Volunteer, Joe Borden, and others joined her in attempting to save all the animals. Many animals did not make it out and several were taken to local veterinarians.

Luff was treated for smoke inhalation.

The shelter is taking any donations. For more information on the shelter and how to help, call 662-720-1033. Donations can also be mailed to Halfway Home Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 102, Booneville, MS 38829.
