COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Top educational minds in the state are gathered at Mississippi University For Women in Columbus this week.

It’s the 81st annual Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities Conference, and educators are brainstorming on ways of raising the academic bar on their campuses.

Dozens of college presidents, administrators, and other distinguished guests are getting a chance to network as they discuss relevant issues affecting college students on their campuses.

The most accepted option discussed at the conference is the ability to grow the economy in the long term by improving education beginning with grades K through 12.

“Four year olds enter kindergarten, or five year olds enter kindergarten without the requisite skills to be successful. And this state is really going to move the needle, then we’ve got to think very differently about how we ensure that we have Pre K opportunities. We’ve got to think about how we put the best teachers with the most needy students,” said Hank Bounds, IHL Commissioner.
