COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The on-again, off-again efforts to bring a low-cost public bus service to Columbus are off again, at least for another month.

And this time the city is the cause of the delay.

City leaders say they never told Indiana-based Lawrence Transit it had to get approval from the city’s Historic Preservation and Planning boards for the placement of bus stops, particularly in the historic district that stretches from downtown out Main Street to 15th Street.

Those boards don’t meet until next month and the bus company must be given time to develop and present formal plans for review.

Talks with the bus company have been going on for more than a year and the city had given it an Aug. 26 deadline to get the bus stops installed and buses running. That deadline has been lifted.
