Another Gets Out of Transportation Commissioner Race

HERNANDO (AP) – Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson is withdrawing from the race for Northern District transportation commissioner.

Johnson, who made the announcement in a news release Wednesday, was one of three candidates challenging incumbent Northern District Transportation Commissioner Mike Tagert in the August Republican primary.

Geoffrey Yoste, who has worked on the staffs of former Gov. Kirk Fordice and former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, withdrew from the race earlier this month.

Johnson and Yoste are supporting Tagert in his re-election effort.

Tagert still will have opposition in the Republican primary. Jimmie Mills of Lee County is on the ballot.

Danny Woods of Winona is the only Democrat in the race and will advance to the November general election.
