STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – New research from the CDC says 1 in every 68 children will be diagnosed with Autism. April 2nd is World Autism Day and organizations from around the globe are hosting fundraisers and raising awareness about the condition.

This is the 7th year of world recognition for autism as a global health crisis. Autism affects millions of people world-wide and does not have a cure. Researchers say autism has it’s roots in the early stages of brain development. Symptoms can include intellectual disabilities, difficulties in attention and motor coordination. Some with autism even excel in math, art and visual skills. The T.K. Martin Center at Mississippi State serves autistic children from 10 surrounding counties and says parents should be on the look out for development challenges early on.

“I think it’s just important for families to know that that’s something to be looking out for and that they need to go to their pediatrician. Got to any other service provider that they may interact with to voice their concerns so that they can get intervention earlier,” says Jane Cirlot-New, Director at the T.K. Martin Center.

The month of April is also designated as Autism Awareness Month.
