PONTOTOC COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Huge new protective multipurpose domes are a step closer in Pontotoc County.

Supervisors have hired Pryor and Morrow Architects to oversee construction of the domes at North and South Pontotoc high schools. The domes, which more often are used as gymnasiums and other school gathering places, cover 10,500 square feet and can protect as many as 1,827 people square feet from up to an EF-5 tornado.

Bids should be awarded by late summer and the domes completed by the end of the year.

Federal grants are covering 90 percent of the costs.

Similar domes were built at Smithville and East Webster high schools after they were destroyed by tornadoes four years ago.
