Area Students Win Art Contest Scholarships

Jackson, MS. For the third year in a row, State Treasurer Lynn Fitch and College Savings Mississippi have provided students across Mississippi the opportunity to win scholarships through the College Savings Mississippi Art Contest.

“I am excited about the opportunity to award four $529 Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) scholarships and four $250 MACS scholarships to these talented Mississippi students,” said Treasurer Lynn Fitch. “This contest is a great opportunity for students, whether in a classroom or in an after school program, to express what they envision for their future.

“Our goal through the College Savings division is to provide families across this state an affordable way to save for college.  We hope these scholarships are a step forward in building that foundation,” Treasurer Fitch continued. “These are the students who will help create a stronger workforce and economy for Mississippi.  It’s up to us to help them reach their goals.”

A $529 MACS scholarship has been awarded to the first place contestant and a $250 MACS scholarship has been to the second place contestant in each of the following age categories: Pre-Kindergarten – 2^nd Grade, 3^rd – 5^th Grade, 6^th – 8^th Grade, and 9^th – 12^th Grade.

Treasurer Fitch and College Savings Mississippi have awarded scholarships to the following students:

Pre-K – 2^nd Grade Division Winner: Camden Lunsford, DeSoto Central Primary School
Pre-K – 2^nd Grade Division Second Place Winner: Kylee Hatcher, South Pontotoc Elementary School
3^rd – 5^th Grade Division Winner: Vaiden Bouder, Union Elementary School
3^rd – 5^th Grade Division Second Place Winner: Dorianne Hines, Power Apac Elementary School
6^th – 8^th Grade Division Winner: Selena Chen, South Jones High School
6^th – 8^th Grade Division Second Place Winner: Desiree Rodriguez, St. Martin Middle School
9^th – 12^th Grade Division Winner: McKenna Franks, South Pontotoc High School
9^th – 12^th Grade Division Second Place Winner: Baylee Howard, Corinth High School

The judges for the contest were Limeul Eubanks, Amanda Cashman, and Andrea Coleman. Eubanks is a Staff Officer III, for the Arts, Library, and Foreign Language at the Mississippi Department of Education in the Office of Elementary Education and Reading. Cushman is an Art Instructor at St. Anthony’s Catholic School.  Coleman is a Whole Schools Initiative Director at the Mississippi Arts Commission.
