Area Students Win Or Place In National Competitions

GUNTOWN, Miss. (WCBI) – Hard work and dedication pay off for science students at Guntown Middle School.

The eighth grade, three student team came in first place in a sustainable transportation contest in Washington DC.

The same team also took third place in a nationwide bridge building competition in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Students have been working hard on the bridge design, and also on their hydrogen powered model car and their teacher says they have reason to be proud.

“They had to discipline themselves and kind of budget their time because they wanted to be outside doing other things but they had to come together as a team, solve problems and actually prepare for presentations, and they were doing two major presentations, getting ready for both of those at the same time,” said science teacher Connie Gusmus.

The three students will head to Jackson next tuesday and to make a presentation for state transportation officials.

In the same bridge building competition, but in a different age group, three area schools earn top honors.

Mantachie High School won the 9th and 10th grade division. We’ll talk with them later this week.

East Union placed third in that group.

Tupelo Middle placed second in the seventh and eighth grade division.
