STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman follows through on his promise to veto the Board of Aldermen’s decision to repeal a discrimination resolution and plus one insurance.

Aldermen made the surprise vote in executive session Tuesday night.

The items were not on the agenda when city leaders went into the closed door session. instead, aldermen cited potential litigation as the reason for the closed session.

In his Veto, Wiseman says the public deserves to have aldermen discuss the issues in public. He says the veto override effort will force such transparency, although he has said he doesn’t expect the five votes to change — a veto override requires five votes.

The plus-one insurance allowed workers and their significant others, including those who are not legally married, to obtain health insurance through the city.

Starkville was the first city in the state to pass an equality resolution in the state, giving protection to people in the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, or transgender community.
