Baptist Golden Triangle Unit Gets National Recognition

COLUMBUS, Miss. (Press Release) – U.S. News and World Report has named Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle’s 23-bed non-residential care unit as one of the country’s best nursing home facilities in 2013.

The hospital’s Transitional Care Unit (TCU) received five out of five stars in each of three categories by the Mississippi Department of Health: health inspections, staffing and how well it met certain quality measures. Baptist’s TCU scored the maximum total of 15 stars for the third consecutive year.

The unit was the only facility in Columbus and one of only four in the state to receive a perfect score. More than 230 facilities in Mississippi were surveyed. The survey is conducted annually by the state on behalf of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Any skilled nursing unit or nursing home that receives Medicare or Medicaid funds is inspected annually and given a rating in the three areas ranging from five stars for ‘much above average’ to one star for ‘much below average.’ These three ratings are then combined to reach an overall rating.

“We are very pleased to have our Transitional Care Unit named as one of America’s Best Nursing Homes again this year,” said Baptist Golden Triangle Administrator Paul Cade. “The recognition is truly a testament to our dedicated staff who works very hard ever day to take care of these patients preparing them for their next level of care.

“We are very proud of our TCU team and the part each one played in reaching this achievement,” Cade added.

Baptist Golden Triangle’s unit is located on the fourth floor of the 5th Street Building. Patients who are discharged from the hospital and admitted to the unit usually stay for 10 to 14 days until they are ready to be moved to the next level of care, whether that is to return to their own home, go to a nursing home, an intense rehab or an assisted living facility.

While in the TCU, an interdisciplinary team assesses the patients’ needs and works toward improving independence. The therapy, dietary, respiratory and pharmacy departments work with the TCU staff to implement an individualized plan of care. The team also works closely with each patient’s family, who are able to receive regular progress reports, preparing them for the patient’s discharge, Cade said.

With 315 beds, Baptist Golden Triangle is the largest regional hospital affiliated with the Memphis, Tenn.-based Baptist Memorial Health Care system. With physicians and surgeons representing almost every medical specialty practicing at the hospital and more than 1,000 health care employees, Baptist Golden Triangle offers a wide range of comprehensive medical care to patients of all ages.

In addition to the Transitional Care Unit, the hospital offers a variety of services to the community, including Baptist Cancer Center; Baptist Behavioral Health Care for those with behavioral and mental health problems; cardiac services, including heart catheterization and heart by-pass surgery; neurosurgery; an emergency room with 24-hour ambulance service; an extensive rehabilitation department, including cardiac rehab as well as a variety of regular, free community educational programs.
